In the English Department at Goole Academy we ensure the progress of each individual student in reading, writing, speaking and listening through the careful exploration of a diverse range of engaging texts whilst taking a rigorous approach to technical accuracy and clarity of expression.
Key Stage 3
In years 7, 8 and 9 the aim is to encourage students to engage both with non-fiction texts and a range Literature from English Literary Heritage texts to contemporary fiction, poetry and plays. Students study different texts and explore features of theme, language and structure. This also provides opportunities for students to replicate these features in their own writing.
All students have four English lessons every week, each an hour long. One of the lessons each week will be given over to private reading where the students bring their own choice of challenging reading material.
In each of the Key Stage 3 years (7, 8 and 9) students will study:
A complete novel looking closely at the author’s craft
A drama unit, which may cover a whole play
A non-fiction unit of work
A poetry unit which may focus on a theme or on the work of a particular poet
A media unit which will examine how a range of media platforms are used to communicate with specific audiences
A language unit, which may take the form of a theme based writing workshop.
In terms of lesson content, all units of work use a wide range of engaging learning activities to ensure progress, accuracy and to develop an appreciation of language and literature.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11), students will be building on the skills developed in KS3 and preparing for GCSEs in English Language and English Literature.
GCSE English Language allows students to demonstrate their ability to use English in real life contexts and uses an investigative and analytical approach to language topics drawing on personal experience.
The course involves assessment on three different aspects of English:
Reading and responding to a variety of different texts, for example media and non-fiction texts
Writing for different audiences and purpose: how to write in a number of different styles so that you can craft your writing to take account of who is reading it, what its purpose is and what form it needs to take
Speaking and listening; how to listen and speak in a variety of contexts. For example, how to deliver individual presentations as well as learn how to work effectively in pairs or groups, along with a focus on drama
In addition to the core GCSE English Language course, students also study GCSE English Literature. Students will experience a range of Literature with a wide variety of appeal drawn from contemporary and modern texts, texts from across the globe and texts which have had a significant influence on our English literary and cultural heritage. This GCSE requires students to explore texts from a personal perspective and focuses on a skills based approach to the study of literature.
Key Stage 5
We offer A level study in both English Literature and English Language as well as the opportunity to re-take GCSE English for those students who achieved less than a C grade.
The AQA English Literature specification followed by Key Stage 5 students lends itself well to be accessible to students of a range of ability levels. Through the range of literature studied it ensures students are exposed to many aspects and genres as possible. It encourages high ability students and those considering studying English in Higher Education to continue to develop their analytical skills. For those less able, it ensures they too are able to access the higher bands of achievement through the close study of set texts.
The Language specification similarly makes challenging demands of the more technically minded student who prefers to examine the mechanics of the language such as detailed syntax and language acquisition.
Both specifications put the onus on the student and require them to take responsibility for their own development as a learner.
